Laser and Photodiode common cathode

Hello,

I am trying to get a circuit working with a laser and a photodiode. I have tested the laser portion and this works perfectly. However I cannot think of a way to test if the embedded photodiode is working. Anyway, the idea is to light up an LED when the photodiode is detecting light from the laser. The laser and photodiode have a common cathode (Style B) which makes it difficult to construct a circuit around the reverse current caused by light detection.

I do not know if this circuit works and have not tested it yet. Please Let me know if you have any ideas. https://www.circuitlab.com/circuit/8tusfg/laser/
