PFN: LC-Ladder Network capable of producing high energy pulses
A 10-section pulse forming network is modeled capable of delivering a 5 kV pulse of approximately 100 microsecond duration into a 0.5 ohm load (10,000 ampere pulse). Such a network requires oil-filled energy storage capacitors and air-core coils. Triggered spark gaps (or hydrogen thyratrons) are used for the load switch.
For optimal pulse shape, the load resistance must be matched to the characteristic impedance of the network. Design formulae are provided that define the PFN impedance and output pulse duration in terms of the network parameters.
