An analog input signal is converted to a digital PWM signal through a 555 timer IC, and is then converted back into an analog signal through an RC lowpass filter.
This example is from the Linear & Nonlinear chapter of Ultimate Electronics Book. It demonstrates a circuit where an overall approximately linear input-output relationship is accomplished through a digital pulse-width modulated intermediate circuit.
