For a PMOS, install the "load" between the PMOS and the ground, while connecting the source-pin of the PMOS to the Positive side of the external DC source.
Add a flyback diode to protect against EMF when using an inductive load.
Resistor R1 is required to protect the MCU against transient that may pass through the gate of the MOSFET (as any transient may somehow pass through a capacitor).
