A 555 timer IC is used to create a simple Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO), converting an input voltage into an output frequency.
This example is from the Linear & Nonlinear chapter of Ultimate Electronics Book. It demonstrates a voltage-controlled oscillator, where a change in input voltage causes a change in output frequency.
